About India Music Week

The ARChive of Contemporary Music (ARC) is creating India Music Week Oct 7-13, 2013 and the India Music Collection.  ARC is a not-for-profit music archive in partnership with Columbia University.

ARC’s mission is to collect and preserve all forms of music from around the world.  Based in New York City since 1985, ARC is the largest popular music collection in the world with more than two million sound recordings.

In 2011 we launched our first “World Music Day” celebrating Islamic music and culture – please see: (, this online site was accessed by more than 250,000 people worldwide on the initial date and still gets over 2,000 visitors daily.  The project was awarded the prestigious “Innovative Use of Archives Award” by the Archivists Round Table of Metropolitan New York.

Building on this success ARC created Brazilian Music Day (BMD), Sept 7, 2012,   an online website to promote and explore the rich cultural heritage of Brazilian music of the past, present and future.   Like the Muslim ‘Day’ BMD offers videos, histories, seminars, concerts, lectures, sound files, sheet music, album cover art galleries, essays, blogs, photos and links all highlighting the importance and beauty of Brazilian music as well as educate a global audience about it’s many genres and facets.

A major component of India Music Week will be the database of ARC’s Indian Music Collection – recordings from the subcontinent and the Asian Indian diaspora held by all archives and libraries around the world.  ARC’s goal is to become the largest collection of Indian music outside of India.  Our hope is to grow this collection of 78s, LPs and CDs in partnership with a cultural institution in India.  Information on all Indian recordings in the world ( or at least the information other institutions are willing to share) will be posted in a freely available online database for reference and research as part of the website.

ARC is seeking partners and sponsors to help us complete this important work and help present India Music Week on October 7 – 13, 2013.   Founding Partners include Columbia University Libraries, Gracenote and the Internet Archive.

Our website Will go up in early Oct 2013, with a formal press release coming soon.  For more information please contact ARC Director B. George at or call: 212-226-6967.

Please join us in creating this important project.  Look for future  ‘Days’ that may turn into ‘Weeks’ exploring Scandinavia (2014), Cuba (2015), Louisiana (2016), China (2017) and then ?
